🔍 The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Reconstructive Surgery and Training Programs in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Cross-Sectional Survey

This study, conducted by the 2nd Chance team in collaboration with partners in Sub-Saharan Africa, examines how the pandemic affected clinical activities and training programs in reconstructive surgery in the region.

Key Highlights of the Study:

🔹 Background: The pandemic disrupted a region already facing a shortage of surgeons, affecting both clinical practices and training initiatives.

🔹 Clinical Impact:

  • 76% of surgeons reported cancellations and delays in surgeries, leading to increased suffering and potential mortality.
  • 83% noted delays in patient care.

🔹 Training: Despite challenges, 9 out of 17 planned workshops were conducted, with significant contributions from African trainers. The pandemic accelerated the integration of young African graduates as trainers.

🔹 Essential Collaboration: Partnerships between African and European trainers sustained training efforts despite travel restrictions.

Conclusion:

The pandemic impacted clinical practices more significantly than training, thanks to the rapid adoption of alternatives such as theoretical lessons and virtual workshops. South-South collaboration is identified as a key strategy to tackle similar future crises.
