🔍 Successful Awake Intubation Using Airtraq® in a Low-Resource Setting for a Patient with Severe Post-Burn Contractures

This study, conducted by the 2nd Chance team in collaboration with partners in Nigeria, documents a complex case of awake intubation for a 25-year-old male with severe post-burn contractures.

🔹 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱: Post-burn contractures significantly complicate airway management, especially in low-resource settings where standard tools like fiberoptic scopes are unavailable.
Innovative Solution: Successful awake intubation using an Airtraq® laryngoscope as an alternative to advanced equipment.
🔹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱: Limited oxygenation, absence of capnography, and improvisation for topical anesthesia with available resources.
🔹 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲: The procedure and surgery were successfully completed, resulting in significant improvement in the patient’s neck mobility.

This study underscores the importance of adaptability, targeted training, and innovation in overcoming anesthesia challenges in resource-limited settings. It highlights the potential of cost-effective tools like Airtraq® to enhance patient safety.

This project was supported by the Fondation pour l’Anesthesiologie-Reanimation.
