From June 23 to 27, 2025, 2nd Chance led a Basic Reconstructive Surgery Training Workshop at Oshakati State Hospital in Namibia, in partnership with COSECSA and the local hospital team.
The mission aimed to strengthen local surgical capacity through an intensive program combining hands-on reconstructive training, post-operative follow-up from the 2024 mission, and care for burn-related mobility loss.

12 COSECSA surgical trainees took part in the workshop, guided by two experienced trainers:
- Dr Ali Modarressi (Switzerland)
- Jean-Yves Beaulieu (Switzerland)
Throughout the week, participants received direct surgical mentorship and practical experience in real operative settings โ a powerful tool for building confidence and skill.
Technology for Better Training
This workshop also integrated cutting-edge tools to enhance the learning process:
- RealWear 4K cameras with Vidhance software allowed live broadcasting of procedures for safer and more effective learning.
- An axial guidance system was used to increase precision during complex reconstructive surgeries.
By combining innovation with hands-on teaching, this approach is helping shape the future of surgical education in low-resource settings.
Advancing Gender Equity

Of the 12 trainees, 7 were women โ a strong signal of progress toward gender balance in surgical education.
Ensuring that surgical training is inclusive and equitable is essential to delivering healthcare that reflects and serves all communities. Equity is not a slogan โ itโs a foundation for lasting impact.
Thanks to the commitment of our institutional partners, sponsors and donors, this mission is helping to strengthen surgical capacity in the region.
Together, we rebuild lives.
