Health‐Related Quality of Life and Social ReintegrationIndicators Following Reconstructive Surgery: AProspective Observational Study

Transforming Lives Through Surgery — The Lasting Impact of Reconstructive Surgery in Africa

A new study published in the World Journal of Surgery followed 82 patients in Tanzania undergoing reconstructive procedures for burn sequelae, trauma, or congenital deformities.

The findings speak volumes 👇
✅ Daily disability dropped from 72% to 9%
✅ Impact on family life fell from 59% to 6%
✅ Social exclusion, discrimination — and even beliefs in witchcraft — dramatically declined

Beyond physical recovery, reconstructive surgery has the power to restore dignity, inclusion, and hope.

These missions are not just about care — they are also training grounds for the next generation of African surgeons, building local capacity for long-term impact.

Conducted by the team at 2nd Chance with local partners, the study also proves that short-term surgical missions can yield long-term, measurable impact — when follow-up and collaboration are done right.
