BUKAVU (DRC) Evaluation mission to assess a project to take care of symptomatic giant swollen thyroid gland
For several months, 2nd Chance antenna in Congo was willing to address for in the outbreak of symptomatic giant swollen thyroid gland in the region already suffering of endemic goitres. The Eastern provinces of DRC which has been confronted for decades with political instability which damaged programs of prevention.
This pathology characterized by an increase of the volume, often visible, the thyroid gland. Often affected member of a same family and especially women, patients with a goitre, unfortunately find themselves gathered in rural areas where the health workers are inexperienced and under equipped to take care of this pathology.
This mission financed by the Foundation Lynx for Hope led the basis for the project.The identification and the development of complementary training for young surgeons posted in the Eastern provinces of Congo will allow to widen the area of care despite the pockets of insecurity which prevent at the moment free movement of patients.
Financing operations is essential for the immense majority of the targeted population who are peasant and without stable income.
